A yeast infection is caused by a fungus that normally lives in the vagina in small numbers. When this normal yeast increases, infection happens. Essentially, a vaginal yeast infection means that too many yeast cells are growing in the vagina. These infections are very common. Although they can be really annoying, they are not usually serious. You’ll recognize the burn and the itch down there. I’m happy to share my natural fixes for yeast infection here.

A healthy vagina has many healthy bacteria and a small number of yeast cells. The most common bacteria, Lactobacillus acidophilus, help keep other organisms-like the yeast-under control.
Yesterday while having lunch with a friend, she mentioned that she had what seemed to be her first yeast infection in years. She described her symptoms and told me how uncomfortable she was. I told her to hold off on the Monistat and let’s try to take this baby down more naturally. She laughed and said she put some garlic up her va-jay-jay but that it didn’t do the trick. This friend knows that I am a Fertility Coach all about a healthy vagina and gut flora, the floras that determine the happiness of the cells of the rest of the body.
I'm not talking about putting garlic in your vagina. Although, it's not a bad idea.
What are the Yeast Infection Natural Fixes?
If you are feeling the itch and the burn, here are some natural things you can do to fight the yeast infection:
- Once or twice a day, at yogurt or drink kefir with live cultures L. bacillus acidophilus, bifido bifidum, L. bulgaricus. Opt for yogurt that is organic, from grass-fed cows, and contains no flavoring or sugars. Most of the mainstream yogurt brands contain added sugar for flavor.
- Make a green drink in a blender (not a juicer), so that you get the added benefits of fiber. Feel free to add yogurt or kefir to your smoothie.
- Invest in a Vaginal Care probiotic. My favorite is Garden of Life. It is always wise to follow the directions on the label, which recommends one capsule by mouth per day. However, if you want an added boost to balance of flora in the vagina, you can insert one capsule into your vagina before bed (don’t do this if you’re pregnant).
- Or, alternatively, order some Vitanica Yeast Arrest, vaginal suppositories available on Amazon.
- At your local health food store, you can pick up some Grapefruit Seed extract. Take as directed on the package. Grapefruit seed extract rids the body of potential harmful microorganisms, especially candida.
What else can you for your Yeast Infection relief?
- Make a very warm compress with a clean washcloth and sprinkle with borax for compresses.
- Take an Epsom salt bath. A nice hot bath will always make anything feel better.
- Once you are ALREADY in your bath, you can add a couple of drops of tea tree oil or peppermint oil.
- Eat clean foods, lots of greens, legumes (lentils and beans), low sugar fruits like berries and watermelon, chicken and fish. Increase garlic and onion. Choose spicy foods over raw or cold foods.
- Avoid alcoholic beverages. Eliminate dairy (besides the yogurt/kefir mentioned above). Go gluten-free and stay away from processed refined sugars (anything white). Get your Vitamin C from non-citrus and acidic fruits and vegetables. This means no oranges, lemon, grapefruit, tomatoes, and pineapple until symptoms subside.
- Wear only cotton underwear. Avoid thongs, aka the poop conveyor belt, which can introduce unwanted bacteria to your lady bits.
- Continue to take your high quality multivitamin.
- Avoid stress.
What about sex with a Yeast Infection?
I’m often asked if you should avoid sex while managing a yeast infection. I err on the side of caution with being intimate and having a vaginal infection. Yeast infection is highly contagious and can easily be passed back and forth from partner to partner.
As always check with your care provider, especially if you are pregnant. Vaginitis and vulvitis can easily be mistaken for yeast infection because the symptoms are very similar.
